How to Love like the Mother of the Universe

The story of the birth of the Hindu goddess Kali is told in ancient scripture that dates back to the 9th century BC. Kali’s name has many meanings. She is the fulfillment of time, the force of time itself. She is the mother of the Universe, and it’s only through her that the Hindu Gods are able to restore peace to the world.

Kali is the warrior goddess who was called upon when the world had fallen out of balance. The demons, which represent egoic-thoughts, had taken over, and chaos reigned.

So the Gods called forth the fiercest form of the divine feminine, so that balance could be restored. This is why the goddess Kali was born; to bring balance back to an imbalanced world suffering from the absence of the divine feminine.

And this is where the 9th century BC sounds profoundly similar to the present day 21st century.

We need Kali as much now as we did back then. We need the presence of the fiercest form of the divine feminine to restore truth and justice within ourselves and within the world.

The goddess Kali is often deeply misunderstood. In images and icons of her, she is naked except for a necklace of skulls and a skirt of severed arms. Her dark black hair is wild and undone, flowing far past her swaying hips. Her skin is radiant dark blue or jet black. And she’s frequently holding out as if her prize the severed head of one of the demons she has slayed.

Dangerous. This is the word that was most often used to describe Kali when I began my research about her. Kali, I was told, warned even, again and again, is a very dangerous goddess.

But here’s where Kali is misunderstood. Kali is here for our liberation, right now, this instant. Like a mother who yanks her child from out of oncoming traffic, Kali will do anything to get us on a path that is worthy of our brief time here.

Kali reminds us that what’s really dangerous is wasting our time on anyone or anything that is no longer serving us, that’s no longer a part of what we have to do to free the soul from the ego.

Kali wants to sever the heads of all the egoic ideas we have about ourselves, the ideas that keep us in relationships that hurt our heart, the ideas that keep us in a profession that isn’t really a calling, a vocation, the ideas that keep us with friends who don’t fully see or support us, the ideas that keep us from feeling worthy of the life we sense we’re meant for, the ideas that keep us from taking care of our bodies, the ideas that suggest we should stay quiet and stay small, and that this is what will keep us safe. The ideas that tell us to stay the same, that change is too hard, too terrifying. The ideas that tell us we must at all costs fit in, that we must never rock the boat or stand up for ourselves or each other.

Kali wants to sever the seven heads of the ego, all seven powers that bind the soul to what is known, to what has been done before, to what has been repeated year after year.

Kali wants to demonstrate that the ego is limited; the ego will die when this body dies. But the soul is bound to no one and to nothing. The soul, which is the other half of what it means to be human, wants to dictate what’s possible for us in the short lifespan we each get to live out.

Kali wants to yank us from out of the monotony of the everyday routine. She wants to hold us close to the fires of the heart, and demand that we begin to use each valuable second, each critical breath, to live the truth of who we are.

Kali wants us to stop pretending we’re small, stop pretending we have to siphon our power through others, stop pretending that love only exists in someone else, in a single relationship, stop pretending that we’re not miracles right now, right here, in the flesh.

Kali wants us, this instant, to step into the truth of who we are, to step into the knowledge of exactly how we’re meant to blaze brightly, of exactly how we’re meant to show up in the world fully, of exactly how we’re meant to be our own version of exceptional, which is utterly unique, how we’re meant to triumph over the voices of the ego that would limit and confine us, and restore balance to our inner world by letting the voice of the soul reign from here on out.

Kali wants us to dare to be difficult, to dare to stand up for ourselves and each other. She wants us to get into a lot of very good trouble, to be the voice of love in all times and all places.

Kali severs all the obstacles that have been in our way, whether those obstacles are our own egoic thoughts, or circumstances in our lives. Kali seeks to destroy all that’s no longer serving us, so that we can be more fully in service of love and more fully aligned with the voice of the soul. Here’s what she says to us right now, in this moment:

TAKE EACH SECOND SERIOUSLY

FREE YOURSELF FROM THE THOUGHTS THAT BIND YOU TO WHAT HAS BEEN

USE EACH DAY WISELY

LISTEN DEEPLY TO WHAT YOUR SOUL WANTS YOU TO DO

YOU ARE HERE IN THIS LIFETIME ONLY BRIEFLY

BECOME WHAT YOU ALONE ARE MEANT TO BE

SO YOU CAN DO WHAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE

BE LEGENDARY

BE IMMENSE

BE THE TRUTH OF WHO YOU ARE

NOW

The French mystic and priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin predicted that, “someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, we will have discovered fire.”

To love like the Mother of the Universe is to harness that heavenly energy, that fire inside us, and use it to light up the world like never before, like we were always meant to. We each know right now in this moment we are here to contribute to this discovery of divine love, to this calling we each have to answer, to dare to strip down like Kali to only how radiant we actually are.

To dare each day to love like the Mother of the Universe.
